I'm kind of blown away that Blizzard is removing the LAN feature from Starcraft. I don't care how upgraded Battlenet is, we're not yet at an age where latency isn't an issue over the internet. Being in the same room, on the same wifi network doesn't mean jack as far as potential lag goes with online gaming. According to GiantBomb.com, they contacted Blizzard who had this to say: QUOTE We don’t currently plan to support LAN play with StarCraft II, as we are building Battle.net to be the ideal destination for multiplayer gaming with StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games. While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy.
Several Battle.net features like advanced communication options, achievements, stat-tracking, and more, require players to be connected to the service, so we’re encouraging everyone to use Battle.net as much as possible to get the most out of StarCraft II. We’re looking forward to sharing more details about Battle.net and online functionality for StarCraft II in the near future. What do you guys think? Step in the right direction, or crippling mistake?

They can't completely get rid of LAN play because it would guarantee the death of pro starcraft. Imagine an OSL finals with lag or a possibility of disconnection. More likely, as someone suggested before, there might be a forced login to BNET before you can get to the LAN options. It won't take too long before somebody hacks up a BNET2 emulator server so that LAN parties can still play with no internet networks.

Everyone is seriously overreacting to this.
I mean, this is BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT ffs. The people who spawned a game that launched professional eSports to the top.
They aren't stupid enough to remove LAN without having a better alternative. This is merely a way to avoid piracy and places like Iccup starting. Iccup is a major issue for Blizzard, and they don't want it to pop up again.
Basically: We will be fine.

This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill, fifteen percent concentrated power of will. Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain and a hundred percent reason to remember the name.
------ Ya know they don't know nothin' about redemption... They don't know nothin' about recovery... Some people, just aren't the type for marriage and family...
------ Now here we go for the hundredth time. Hand grenade pins in every line. Throw 'em up and let somethin' shine, goin' out of my fuckin' mind.
------ You better lose yourself in the music, the moment. You own it, you better never let it go. You only get one shot, do not miss your opportunity to blow. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime.
