Well hello sc2gg, I am yet another starcraft addict, and I will make it no secret that my love for Aiur extends beyond the cosmos. However, I am a recent convert.
Like many normal gamers, I played campaign mode way back around the original release of the game, and for many years, only knew of stories of the Korean "art" of the game. I hadn't really gotten a good understanding of the game, and was generally bad at the game to a point where playing online matches were never fun and I would deny my friends' requests for me to play SC with them (terrible, I know).
Well, last May, during my break between semesters, I ended up at a friend's house hanging out. Like most other CS majors, we were both gamers whom generally exchange "shop talk" like normal people. I introduced him to another obsession of mine (music gaming), and in return, he introduced me to a Starcraft replay. I don't remember who both players were, but one of them was Boxer.
I had never seen anything like it. I couldn't comprehend how they could simultaneously control so many units, or how to engage so rapidly and build with such speed. My friend began spouting off numbers and comments and he would pause the game just to point out the current state of things. My mind was blown. This shit is insane. I had no idea the game was this complex. I had barely even scratched the surface.
My friend professed to have learned all of his knowledge of the game the oldschool way (by calculating all the numbers yourself), but knowing myself that there were certainly online communities dedicated to this sort of thing, I discovered VODs and soon I became interested in learning hotkeys and shortcuts...
Problem is, I'm a lefty, and my right hand is crippled in a way. Without being more verbose than I am already, I only have functional use of one finger on my right hand (which mostly hovers at the 'p' key for probes and patrol-move). Much of my current macroing ability requires use of my left hand (which I currently move from mouse to kb and back as needed), but knowing how in-depth Starcraft can be, sacrificing the ability to use the mouse for a moment can be fatal given dire circumstances.
I'm managing well at the moment...My APM back in March was around 20 (yeah, uber-noob), and for a time, I was stuck around 50 or so. Now, I'm in the 60-80 range. If I can get above 100 before the new year, I'll be satisfied. I have OK macro and micro (I'm still D on ICCUP but I'm working on it!!), but hopefully spending time on this forum will contribute to my improvement at this wonderful game.
