Full Version: Predictions about the Competitive Starcraft Community
SC2GG - Your Gateway to StarCraft > StarCraft > StarCraft 2 Discussion

I'm kinda predicting that the competitive scene for for Starcraft will split into two once Starcraft 2 comes out. Some people that are hardcore Starcraft 1 fans will outright dislike the new units and gameplay of Starcraft 2, and there will always be lots of competitive Starcraft players that dislike Starcraft 2 because it will "take less skill" to play. The impact of SC2 on the competitive scene will probably be like the impact of Brawl on the competitive Super Smash Bros. scene.

Anyway, discuss the impact of SC2 on the competitive SC scene in general.

Everybody will leave to play WWF Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain.

Community splits like that happen all the time with releases of sequels. Normally if the new game is a disappointment (like Brawl, or CS: Source), the original will live on along side the newer, crappier game.

If we are going to assume that SC2 will be as terrible as Brawl, which is in actuality a fuckin terrible game that people only play because they aren't good enough to play Melee (that, or they are just simple-minded and liek new charactersss), then the community will more or less split. And then after everyone figures out that SC2 is bad, it will decline, and SC1 will return (though never to its former glory).

Thats assuming SC2 will be like Brawl. If SC2 is a good game, there really wouldn't be any reason to play SC1 anymore, and SC2 will more or less absorb the SC1 community.

The present Starcraft-community will not split with the arrival of The Sequel, I predict. Rather, it will start shaking and boiling, as everybody to varying degrees start playing SC2 with different ambitions. The Korean pro-scene has one hell of a lot of money vested in the professional Starcraft: Brood War-scene, and they will not close that door until the new game has achieved enough popularity and adequate balance.

Hence, Brood War as a competitive Korean sport will live on for about a year or so, with Starcraft 2 as an ever growing shadow. Blizzard will most likely pressure GomTV (says 100 million won) to start broadcasting pro-SC2 as soon as the game is released, but we are talking January at the earliest. Which is why there will not be two camps of Starcraft-players, but rather a whole bunch of them, with fleeting borders. In 12-18 months, Starcraft 2 may have begun to actually claim a sizable portion of Brood War's glory, but not much sooner.

After all, this is neither Super Smash Bros or Brawl we're talking about - it's the most fiercely competitive game on earth wink.gif

I can tell you guys that there are alot of parties taking SC2 seriously. I mean, look at EG. They grabbed all the top American SC1 players. True, they are still doing good in SC1 but it's because EG wants to move into SC2.

I agree with Sentenal that it will take awhile for SC2 to overcome SC1 in Korea. But I think Day 1 SC2 will be the biggest, most competitive RTS outside of Korea.
