Proleague Weekly: Week 3
Official SC2GG Coverage of the '09-10 Proleague Season
The Rundown: A Review of Week 2 Action
By BachHo
The new season of Proleague has almost become a mirror of last season with teams shocking audiences with upsets left-and-right. It might be early in the season, but things are already looking dismal for some of last season's top competitors. Yeah, I'm looking at you Samsung KHAN.

KHAN and T1 had everything to prove this week. Unfortunately, the only thing they proved was that this is going to be a long and grueling round for each. KHAN got embarrassingly 6-0'ed this week, losing to both T1 and KT in terrible, terrible fashion. T1 took another brutal hit this week, losing to a very underrated MBC team. The struggles for these two teams are the same; a lack of strong Zergs and solid Protoss maps have led both to the bottom of the barrel. For the moment, the big question will be how big the barrel will be in the end, because these two teams don't look like they'll be climbing out anytime soon. STX and CJ Entus also took heavy losses this past week with SouL falling in the ace match against WeMade FOX and CJ losing in the ace match against eSTRO. WeMade and eSTRO have gotten a lot of flack in the past, but they are quickly gathering a huge fan base in recent weeks thanks to some brilliant StarCraft from both sides. It is certainly an amazing time to be a FOX or eSTRO fan right now.
More Bias Hype on KT
It was another killer week for KT Rolster. Their lineup looks better by the day: Flash and Luxury are streaking , Violet and Stats are playing beautiful StarCraft all-around, and their excellent back-line of Zergs are doing absolutely everything right. The season is about to take a major turn for KT next week though when they begin their run through the top teams in the league.

The Stats Corner, or: "How Flash is Destroying Proleague"
By BachHo
It's been an interesting start to the new season as teams continue to test the waters on the new map pool. So far, the top players from last season have returned to dominate the charts again, but a few new faces have entered the arena to challenge the older generation.

Individual Stats

Flash and Luxury continue to stay on top of the rankings this week with 4-0 records. The two stars of KT have been dismantling everyone in their path as of late, in particular Flash and his inspired TvZ play. Moving down the list, we have two more Zergs behind Luxury, including Calm who went 4-1. Calm continues to be an absolute Proleague beast, but his ace match inconsistencies still seem to be holding him - and STX - back this season. Fortunately, Modesty and by.hero were able to step up over the first two weeks and carry STX to key wins, but in the long run Calm needs to be the one that takes charge if STX wants to stay up top. Some unexpected faces are in the top ten this week, including RorO, Shine, and Sea. Sea picked up a big Week 1 ace match victory and cruised through his opponent in Week 2 to stay on the list. Shine and RorO have been on autopilot for WeMade FOX with their surprisingly excellent Zerg play. Familiar faces round out the list for the week.
The ZvP count continues to be devastatingly tilted in Zergs favor at 11-4 this week. Admittedly, most of the wins for Zerg were one-sided affairs, with Calm pouncing on Rock and EffOrt crushing SangHo. The actual count for the week was 3-2 ZvP, so the issue of imbalance has yet to be truly resolved. We'll have more of an indication of where things are in the matchup as things progress. The new maps in general have proven to be somewhat even, but then there's Moon Glaive where Terran have gone undefeated. Best described as the new Rush Hour, the map has become exclusively Terran with seven TvT's having been played on it. Expect fantasy, sKyHigh, and other great TvT'ers to be specializing there this round. Tornado has hinted towards Zerg, but again, it is still too early to tell. Outsider, on the other hand, has become almost painfully Zerg favored though, with all but one game being a Zerg victory, and five ZvZ's already played there. The map distribution clearly shows teams abusing the current trends, with Zerg dominating lineups at 69 and counting - over 15 more then Terran.

A New T1 Hero?
By Ranshin
It has been a universal truth, all the way from the beginning of the last Proleague season, that SKT1 Zergs are horrible. Hyuk fails, s2 is garbage and even the hopeful Thezerg has shown that whatever hype he might‘ve garnered, he definitely does not deserve his name.
Read MoreShow/Hide Spoiler

I bet you didn't see this coming.
Hyuk became a saving grace of sorts, having a four game win streak at the end of the season, going 2-0 in the playoffs. Overall however, last season was an abysmal performance for the the T1 Zerg lineup, which went a total 20-33 last season, including playoffs. As we all know, we can trust the Terran as well as the Protoss lineups for T1 to get their fair share of wins, with Bisu and Fantasy leading the pack. They‘re going to need more support from their Zerg lineup, however, if they don‘t want to find themselves fighting for a lower playoff spot and sit comfortably at the top. Having MuMyung as the new Zerg coach in the T1 team has however already shown some results, unless we‘re talking about a weird fluke.
Nevermind the fact that Hyuk went 2-0 in the Proleague 08-09 Grand Finals. Nevermind that he won the STX Masters Cup finals for his team by all-killing STX Soul (Calm or no Calm). But don‘t ignore the fact that he‘s gone 2-1 in the current Proleague season. Let's take a look at what he's done so far.
Hyuk Take 1: Hyuk vs. KwanroShow/Hide Spoiler
T1 started the season by 3-0‘ing Woongjin Stars, with new team face Kwanro falling to Hyuk on Tornado. Nothing really special to say about this match. Kwanro starts at 11, Hyuk at 7, both scouting in the wrong direction with their overlords. Hyuk plops down his Spawning Pool alongside his Extractor, while Kwanro decided to take a risk on a four player map by taking a quick expo. By the time Kwanro‘s pool was ready, he was already forced to pull most of his drones to try to save his natural from Hyuk's zerglings, and fails.
Hyuk followed this up by teching to lair and getting his spire off one base, also putting down a sunken in his main near his drones for insurance. After some microing back and forth, Kwanro got zerlings into Hyuk‘s main while trying to retake his natural. These were, however, quickly pushed back when the mutas turned his forces into red puddles. Hyuk then flew his mutas to Kwanro natural where Kwanro‘s spore colonies weren‘t nearly in time to help him, so he tapped out.

G'Bye lair. Maybe Kwanro should've stayed on CJ?

Hyuk Take 2: Hyuk vs. StorkShow/Hide Spoiler
Hyuk‘s second game was against Stork on Heartbreak Ridge. With all the PvZ unbalance talk and Heartbreak Ridge being bad for Protoss, you‘d still think that STORK wouldn‘t LOSE TO HYUK, right? The game began with your standard fare PvZ, with Stork going for a fast expand and Hyuk going overpool and then double expanding. Stork plays a wee bit risky on his side, getting only one cannon to protect his Nexus and using a Gateway to make a smaller choke. Hyuk takes advantage by getting speedlings and running by the two Zealots protecting before a second cannon warps in.

Coming through. Thanks chaps.
This doesn‘t get Hyuk many probe kills, but he gets the complete scout on Stork's base. He loses an overlord to a corsair, but then forces it back with scourge. Stork replies by sending two Zealots to Hyuk‘s third and a DT to his natural. Both attacks fail, though, and more roving DT‘s get sniped by hydras supported by speed upgraded ovies. Stork knows at this point that he has to do some damage so he sends eight speedlots to Hyuk‘s Natural, taking down a Hydra den and sunken, but Hyuk‘s simcity and quick reinforcement forces him back. It‘s at this point that we see Hyuk with a mutalisk clump flying around around Stork‘s main. He uses these to keep Stork in his base with only zealots and a few goons on the way, as well as picking off a HT and a probe or two, giving him ample time to take a fourth base in the process.
Hyuk throws together a lurker contain, but Stork is able to work his way through it one storm at a time. Once Stork clears the lurkers, he suddenly found himself facing a horde of hydralisks from out of nowhere. Stork fights valiantly but gets forced back to his natural choke by massive waves of hydralisk reinforcement being produced from four gas Zerg. It doesn‘t take Hyuk long to break through, despite nice storms from Stork. Once his entire defensive grid is broken and his forces being picked off as soon as they join in trying to fight a losing a battle, Stork types in GG.

A few too many Hydras methinks.

Hyuk Take 3: Hyuk vs. SeaShow/Hide Spoiler
Hyuk‘s next test came in a matchup where his win rate is less than 20% in twenty games going into it. Moon Glaive was the stage, and one time monster Terran Sea[Shield] his opponent. Both players started off by prioritizing economy, Hyuk going 12 hatch and Sea going one-rax expand. Both players played passively to start off with, Sea consolidating his defenses and Hyuk going for a two-hatch muta build.
Hyuk then went muta crazy on Sea, razing turrets in the natural and main and killing marines and medics left and right. Got a few SCVs to boot. He couldn‘t continue his attack once Sea built a million turrets, but he did take an expo right behind his main, which game him a quick reinforcement route. At this time at the game it seemed that Hyuk had map control and just need to consolidate his position. Instead, he teched to hive... and got a den... and a greater spire. Nevermind flying a bunch of his mutas into a bunch of turret and marine fire and getting mass hydras... Oh Hyuk.

That'll work. Now what can I do to f#!k this up?
Sea used the chance to brilliantly split his forces into several groups and distracted Hyuk‘s forces with one while going to raze his natural with another, taking out all the drones. Hyuk‘s third also took some damage, but was saved in time. Hyuk then sent his fresh new guardians and hydras on a frontal assault on Sea's natural, which had tanks and science vessels to protect. Sea‘s MnMs meanwhile went and razed Hyuk‘s natural, which included his hive. Once Sea‘s forces went for Hyuk‘s main and there were no more Zerg units anywhere, Hyuk typed out.

Damn you Hyuk for making me root for you. Damn you.

Other STK1 ZergsShow/Hide Spoiler
In other news, Thezerg played like crap when he tried to do pull a Calm by hiding his Zerglings for a surround against hyvaa of eSTRO. Instead, he allowed a mass of enemy Speedlings into his main which in turn made his economy resemble the current Icelandic stock market. GG.
An overall 2-2 start for the T1 Zergs at the very least shows some promise. T1 doesn't need its Zergs to have a winning record. Hell, they don't even need an even win-loss ratio. As long they get a 40-45% win ratio, I think the others will take care of the rest. Let's see what happens.
With a Head Start

As another Proleague season begins, a team’s goal is of two. One is to use this chance as a test run for the team’s rookies before things starts getting serious. Another goal is to set up an atmosphere in the Proleague scene by setting good early records in the league.

The stronger your team was in the previous season, the better you had to perform in the new season to show that nothing will change in the new season. The worse your team was in the previous season, the better your team had to perform to show others that the new season was your season. In order to make this statement, one has to witness the first few matches of any league and its effects on team morale and the general mood as they pass through the rest of the league.
UpMaGiC and hyvaa. RorO and Mind. These names have been the source of one of the biggest mood changing in the 09-10 Proleague. That’s right. WeMade and eSTRO has been taking wins after wins from teams with high expectancy and current day respect. Defending champion, SKT1? No problem. Outdoing Best and Fantasy, eSTRO took the game 3:1. Winner’s League champion, CJ Entus? Taking down the captain and the ex-captain, eSTRO won 3:2. The rising teams Hite and STX were both defeated by WeMade. And the slump-fest of a team, Samsung, had no chance again WeMade. The only team insurmountable to eSTRO and WeMade is KT Rolster, who has been going with an all-win streak.
When 09-10 Proleague started, the top bets ended on Hwaseung, SK, KT, Samsung, STX, Hite, and CJ. eSTRO and WeMade was tossed around with ROKAF. But right now eSTRO and WeMade are some of the current top teams in the Proleague standings. We hope that this knocks some sense into the other teams and hope for continued good performance from eSTRO and WeMade.

KHAN't Handle the Truth
By BachHo
It's only been a few months since KHAN was busy destroying the competition on their way to a playoff birth where they crushed a strong hite team. New faces such as Miracle and Great seemed poised to help bring KHAN to the top of the food chain alongside the big three while Stork seemed to be firing on all cylinders. JangBi and firebathero were kind of just there, ready to grab wins when needed. By all means, it looked like a good time to be KHAN fan. But that was then, and this is now.
Read MoreShow/Hide Spoiler
At a disastrous 0-4, KHAN is off to the worse start in the history of the team. The flaws are numerous. For starters, JangBi and firebathero - two of the big three that KHAN has become famous for - have slumped nearly as hard as sAviOr in 2008. Stork has failed to hit his stride, taking a devastating lost to Hyuk in his first game this season and then watching his team get utterly dismantled by KT before he could even play. Great hasn't even played; the one time he made lineup, KHAN got blown away 0-3 against SKT1.

So, how much are we paying you again?
While KHAN's problems are vast, none hits harder then having the worst Zerg line in the league. Their troubles here run deep. First, there's Chavi. Let's face it, it's Chavi. He's far from a consistent player, and his one-sided lost to BeSt in a PvZ is a fair indication of his of potential at the moment. Next up is oDin, who doesn't even seem close to A-level gaming when he's onstage. Most of his wins have come off of worst players, such as Reach (sorry mantoss fans, but it's true) and Rock. Juni showed promise when he generated some memorable GOM moments, but he seems like a one-trick pony in the end, and great is a clearly superior player in comparison. Some may claim great to be a solid answer to the doubters - and for awhile he was - but he is no ace player and has failed to deliver in the individual league play.
KHAN's inability to take advantage of this season's Zerg-friendly map pool has easily become their biggest downfall, and will continue to be. Things only get more difficult with the current problems in PvZ. Some people call it a hoax, but the stats don't lie - it's hunting season out there. Top it all off with JangBi and firebathero's struggles as mentioned earlier, and you have a team that just can't compete with the current Proleague. KHAN fans will want to find something to hold on to, because it is going to be a long and bumpy ride for coach January and company this season.

The Dig on Week 3Show/Hide Spoiler
Lim Yo Hwan. No name is more important in the history of professional StarCraft gaming. SlayerS_'Boxer', the legendary face of StarCraft makes his 09-10 season debut this week against Hwaseung OZ's Killer. The legend count doesn't stop there though; YellOw - the Storm Zerg - also makes his season debut this week against offline sensation han, who won his first Proleague match this past week. It'll be interesting to see how these two legends fair. YellOw proved that he could still be a major threat when he shocked everyone with a magnificent win over Bisu last season, but he still has to prove that he can keep up with the younger players. BoxeR is all too legendary for his shenanigans. Even out of his prime, he will always be a threat to anyone he plays.

The KT crew get a pleasant break from their destruction of PL.
KT gets the first challenges of the season this week against CJ Entus and Hwaseung OZ. KT has been beyond impressive so far, but this will be a real indicator of where KT goes this season. The key games to look out for will be in the OZ series when Stats takes on Movie and Luxury faces off against EffOrt. Stats and Movie are battling for more then their teams right now; they are also battling for a permanent place on their teams. Movie has struggled to pick up wins in the first two weeks, and Stats has Violet to contend with. This will be an important game for both players. Luxury is a streaky player - that's no big secret - but he tends to lose it in a hurry when something dramatic happens, and EffOrt is the perfect player to do that. He's had a strong and steady start so far, and is more then capable of taking down a streaking Luxury. If there was one match to watch this week, this is it.
T1 joins KT in the CJ/OZ gauntlet this week. Bisu and company are looking to bounce back this week against Jaedong and Hwaseung, but they'll have to go through the sophmore sensations Killer and Perfectman to do so. T1 is still a favorite overall in both series this week thanks to Bisu and fantasy's underwhelming matchups, but their recent inconsistent play from BeSt and the Zerg line has T1 on the ropes. eSTRO, on the other hand, has been the rope for several teams so far this season. With an impressive 3-1 start to Proleague, eSTRO seem to be in a commanding position. All their Terran stars are firing at will, and hyvaa is slowly looking like one of the very top Zergs around with the way he's been playing. They have two games this week against STX and hite, two teams that most definitely want to avoid a lost after taking a beating in Week 2 from WeMade FOX. Expect both of hyvaa's games this week to be the key factor in each series.
The games to watch this week include: Kal vs Really, both of whom have shown great PvT, Luxury vs EffOrt in what should be a top tier showdown, Flash vs sAviOr, in what either will be a one-sided Terran display or a triumphant 2009 chant, fantasy vs sKyHigh in what should be a monstrous TvT dropship war, Sea vs Midas, who shocked everyone with a win over Leta last week, and speak of the devil, Leta vs hyvaa in what should be the key match of the hite/eSTRO series. That's it for this edition of the weekly, later days, and enjoy the games.
